(Away) Championship
fevnut's musings
We bottled it!
So, many of us went off to Halifax
last Sunday and were in a buoyant mood awaiting kick-off. It was a must win
game and there were reasons to be confident. After all, despite losing to
Halifax sometimes in recent years we had won our last ten games at the Shay.
After 8 minutes Halifax score a converted try but there have been many games
this season when the opposition has scored first and then we come back for a
good win. No worries. And sure enough the next score is a superb try from Misi
Taulapapa (possibly the best Fev try he has ever scored) and we are level. Then
Hardo kicks a penalty and we are ahead - we’re on our way.
But it wasn’t to be and we left the
ground bitterly disappointed having bottled our must win match. What a
depressing drive home!
Now everyone is looking for possible
scenarios that could see us still finish in the Top 4 but it is really
difficult to come up with one that is even half convincing.
A new money raising venture
Hey, Mark
Campbell. We are so good at bottling big matches that maybe we could raise
extra income for the club by setting up a bottling plant on the land between
the railway end and the railway line. We have bottled it every time we have
gone to Blackpool - three summer bashes and a Northern Rail Cup final. We
bottled the play-offs three times out of four between 2010 and 2013 after
finishing top of the league.
But it’s
nothing new as our older supporters will recall. Back in the 1980s we got to
the Yorkshire Cup semi-finals in 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1987 and every time we
were fortunate enough to get a home draw. We lost all 4!
A little
further back and we got to the Challenge Cup semi-final in 1958, 1959, 1960 and
1962. Each time we got to play our semi-final at Odsal - and lost every time!
We were back at Odsal for another semi-final in 1978 and lost that one too!
Have we abandoned hope?
NO!!! We’ll
be off to Swinton hoping for a big enough win to give us a chance of holding
off Leigh on points difference. We’ll be there for the London match hoping,
above hope, for a match that makes up for last Sunday at the Shay! And yes, we
are off to Toronto hopeful of a miracle!
Whenever we
feel like despairing we remind ourselves of what it must have been like to be a
Fev fan in the 1930s when, in the seven seasons from 1930/31 to 1936/37 Fev finished
in the bottom 3 of the league 6 times and at the very bottom on 3 of those
years.
Abandon hope - never!
Even if we
do finish outside the top 4 then at least we are likely to have a happier end
of season that the miserable times in the qualifiers in the last couple of
years. And you never know - we might even win a trophy like we did in 2015.
ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE
