Past Matches against Halifax

LAST TIME (2021)

In our 100 years, we have so far played 3,680 matches. That match against Halifax in 2008 (see above) had the most points scored in any of them! It was the final game of the season and whatever the result it would have made no difference to either team.

That 1925 Challenge Cup tie has to be one of the most extraordinary ever. First match and first replay drawn with no tries scored in either. Fev won the second replay (at Leeds) 6-2 but there were no tries in that game either.

Do you remember the 2010 play-off matches? Fev won the league finishing 6 points above Halifax in second place. In the Qualifying Semi-Final Fev beat Halifax easily by 46-16 with a hat trick and seven goals from Kyle Briggs.

Fifteen minutes into the second half of the Grand Final at Warrington, Fev were cruising to becoming Champions in a 22-4 lead. The match was then stopped for a long time because of a fire which had started in the stand where the Halifax supporters were situated.

On the resumption Fev had lost their momentum and by the time of the hooter Halifax had drawn level at 20-20 and then went on to kick a drop goal in golden point extra time.

Oldham v Fev: Match Details

Combined score for our home and away Championship matches against Oldham in 2021 is 116-10!

Championship Table, Results and Fixtures

With the season drawing to a close we have now incorporated into the table details that show the teams that are confirmed for the top 6 play-offs and those that still have the possibility to make the play-offs. We have done the same with relegation.
There have been statements that Fev are now guaranteed a top 2 finish. Fev are now virtually certain to do so but it is not a mathematical certainty. Because of the win deduction in calculating the win% Fev and Halifax would finish on the same percentage if Halifax were to win their 3 remaining games and Fev to lose their 3. However, Halifax would have to win their games by huge margins and Fev to lose by huge margins for Halifax to make up the ground on Points Ratio.

Oldham v Fev: 21 Man Squads

Fev and Oldham have now both named their 21 man squads for Sunday.

We have placed the players into positions with guess work. As Oldham showed considerable improvement in their match against Toulouse last week we have listed their squad with the same 13 starters.

To our surprise Harvey Spence is in the Oldham squad so we have to assume that there is no clause in his loan deal stopping him from playing against Fev.

In all matches the entire Oldham team have scored a total of 290 points. Craig Hall, alone, has scored 257 for Fev!

fevnut's musings 24: Strength in Depth, James Harrison - Time Traveller and Alex Walker

Strength in Depth

How many times, over the years, have Fev suffered from injuries to a small squad.

So, there have to be huge plaudits handed out to those responsible for our recruitment this season. We have suffered so many injuries this year and yet we keep on turning out winning performances.

Last week, a few minutes before kick-off we glanced down at the area in which our injured players were sitting and there we saw, chatting together in a group, Jack Bussey, Brad Day, James Harrison, Craig Kopczak and Junior Moors. What a wonderful pack that other Championship clubs would love to have.

And yet, without them, we managed to put 64 points past Dewsbury whilst only conceding 6.

Earlier on in the season we were struggling with injuries and suspensions to the backs and now it’s primarily the forwards but players come into the side and the winning performances just keep coming.

When necessary, of course, we have brought in loan players and by and large they have fitted in really well. Again, a sign of excellent recruitment procedures.

James Harrison

Of course, it is sad to see James Harrison leaving us at the end of the season. What we find even sadder is that injury will prevent us being able to watch him playing for the rest of 2021 and thus the lack of opportunity for him to take his farewell on the pitch.

He will also be very much missed by the Featherstone Rovers Foundation, for whom he has worked on a casual basis. His contribution to the Foundation has been excellent, conscientious and of high quality.

We were very surprised to see an article on ‘facebook’ referring to his departure to Hull Kingston Rovers. It stated that he was a Maltese international player. It also states the same on his Wikipedia page.

Keeping, as we do, a record of the careers of all Fev players both for other clubs and for representative teams (all detailed in our ‘Fev Squad 2021: Complete Stats’ page) we were dismayed to discover this which was missing from our Representative database.

A little time researching the issue and we discovered that James Harrison had played for Malta against Lebanon in a match which took place on May 6th, 2017.

Had we made a mistake by omission in our records? We checked further and there was James playing for Batley at Mount Pleasant (ironically against Hull KR) on May 7th, 2017.

What we want to know is how on earth he travelled from Sydney to Batley in order to play in both places on two successive days!

Do you believe it? We don’t and, unless proved otherwise, we will assume that there is a second ‘James Harrison’ who played for Malta. Oh, the trials and tribulation of dealing with rugby league statistics.

Alex Walker

The games that Alex has so far played for Fev have seen him playing really well and you can’t argue with 4 tries in three games including some beauties.

It was, therefore, with dismay that we read that Wakefield would probably recall him because of the injury to Max Jowitt.

And then we remembered what we thought it had said when Rovers announced his loan signing and went back to check and this is what was on the Rovers website:

“Featherstone Rovers have signed Scotland international and Wakefield Trinity fullback Alex Walker on loan until the end of the season.  The terms of the agreement mean that Walker will be unavailable for recall from his parent club and will remain with the Rovers for the remainder of the 2021 season.”

Another great bit of business. And wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could secure his signature for 2022.

Milestones

There were yet more milestones and congratulations for Fev players last Sunday.

John Davies’ try took him past 150 points for Fev.

Frankie Halton made his 50th career appearance.

And Craig Hall achieved yet another when his 32 points took him past 1,750 in his career and past 250 points for Fev this year.

Craig now sits at the top of the Championship charts for Try Scorers, Goal Kickers and Points Scorers. Maybe he should try and kick 3 drop goals on Sunday to give him a full house!

T'Other Side: Oldham

FIRST TEAM SQUAD

LAST TIME OUT

2021 MATCHES

Head Coach (caretaker): Brendan Sheridan

Oldham parted company with former Head Coach, Matt Diskin, at the end of June after they had only won two of their first eleven Championship matches but the change doesn’t seem to have helped as they are still on only two wins.

Previous assistant coach, Brendan Sheridan, has taken over for the rest of the season in a caretaker capacity.

We know very little about Sheridan despite an extensive trawl through our database and the internet.

We cannot find any reference to him playing for a professional club. He has played for and coached Birstall Victoria ARL and coached Dewsbury Celtic.

In 2020 Brendan developed serious Coronavirus and was in hospital in a coma. We wish him well in his recovery.

The only other thing we know is that he is the brother of Ryan Sheridan, former Fev assistant coach and current Castleford assistant coach.

Captain: Gareth Owen

Made his début with Salford in 2010 and played 37 games in Super League for them in 2010-2013. In 2014 he played on loan at Sheffield Eagles and then signed for Oldham in 2015.

He is a hooker and has occasionally played at half-back when required.

Star Man: Dan Abram

Dan started with Barrow Raiders as a hooker in 2016. In 2018 he joined Whitehaven and then Rochdale in 2019. He moved to Oldham in 2020.

Nowadays he is primarily a fullback although he fills in as a halfback when required. He is also Oldham’s main goal-kicker.

There is a strong family connection with the Oldham club. Dan’s father, Darren, played for the Roughyeds from 1992 to 1997 and also in the current Oldham squad is Jamie, Dan’s younger brother.

Loan signings

On August 6th young Huddersfield prop, Fenton Rogers, came on loan to Oldham whether he is still there we don’t know. Also currently on loan at Oldham is Featherstone halfback, Harvey Spence.

The Fev connection

Amongst the pre ‘Summer Era’ players who have played for both Oldham and Fev are Terry Clawson, David Hobbs, Mick Morgan, Terry Ramshaw and Iva Ropati.
