Coming
through from the reserves
For so many
years now we have been lacking the joy of watching a player come through the
reserves to make their début in the first team. And then, at last, we had both
Jorge Richardson and Jimmy Beckett. And they both did themselves and Rovers
proud. We are looking forward to watching their development. And then there was
also Jack Render who had previously played three games, all of them on the wing
as he was set to do last Saturday. Then, between the warm up and the kick-off,
he was moved to fullback following the injury during the warm-up to Kiedan
Hartley who should have been a third reserves player making his first start.
Jack Render had an excellent game despite being given a huge increase in
responsibility with only a few minutes notice.
The other side of the coin
We have now played just nine games this year and we
have used an almost unbelievable total of 31 different players. What sort of
way is that to build a team? We love to watch Fev winning but nevertheless would
be far happier to see us treating this year as a team-building year in order to
have a more experienced group playing together in times to come. The fact that
we were able to beat another Championship side (who had had a good win against
Barrow the week before) suggests that if we were to use our own players for the
rest of the season we probably wouldn’t get into the top five but we would be
in a much better position in the years to come than we will be if we are
relying so heavily on short term fixes with dual registration and loan players.
The
ecstacy and the agony
Wasn’t it
fantastic watching Thompson Teteh scoring that first half hat-trick - the first
one by a Fev player this year? We had already seen some tremendous defensive
displays from him but on Saturday he came alive as an attacking player. We were
ecstatic about it and wondered whether he could go on to threaten our 6 tries
in a match record seeing as his third try came in the 26th minute. Just our
typical, terrible luck that he looks to have got seriously injured in scoring
that third try. Here’s hoping that he is not out for too long for both his sake
and ours.
Injuries
As far as we know we have
injury problems with several potential first team players. In particular Connor
Carey, Tom Holmes, Josh Walters and Dakota Whylie. And now, sadly, we have to
add Thompson Teteh and possibly Watson Boas to that list. It really is about
time that loyal supporters were told what the situation is with these players
and how long it is until we might see them back again.
Coffee
We have made it known
previously how opposed we are to the food and drink ban so long as there are no
healthy options available but we want to give credit where it is due. Although
we prefer to drink coffee we have always drunk tea at the ground because what
has been sold as coffee is unrecognisable to us as having any relationship to
that noble drink. But now there is wonderful, quality coffee available. Real
coffee that it is very, very good. Yes, it is quite a lot more expensive than
the instant muck but it is really worth it. If you like coffee then we can
strongly recommend this new offering which is available from the cabins
opposite the entrance between the burgers and chips outlet and the alcoholic
drinks. Thank you!
