LAST TIME OUT
Head
Coach: Paul Crarey
Paul Crarey has been
the Barrow head coach since 2015 and he was also head coach in 2006 and 2007.
He had a very brief stint as head coach at Whitehaven in 2008 but departed in March
of that year. He has re-built the Barrow side which includes many players who
have come up through the amateur clubs in Cumbria.
In 2017 his team won
promotion through the League One play-offs and despite being heavily tipped for
relegation in 2018 they finished 5th in the Championship Shield, above
Sheffield, Rochdale and Swinton.
His playing career was
as a hooker, mainly with Barrow but he also played for Carlisle.
Captain: Martin Aspinwall
Barrow
Raiders captain, Martin Aspinwall, brings a lot of super league experience to
their side. He began his career as an 18 year-old with Wigan, his hometown club
in 2001 and stayed there until 2005. That was followed by five years at
Huddersfield Giants and then a year each at Castleford Tigers and Hull FC. He
had three years at Leigh with a short loan spell at Swinton. He joined Barrow in
2016. He has also played for Lancashire, England A and Great Britain.
At
the back
Stargroth
Amean, winger or centre, was signed this
year from PNG Hunters. He has played 5 games for the PNG national team
including 3 during the 2017 World Cup.
Deon
Lewis Cross, centre or winger, made his
professional début last season with Rochdale and remarkably, in his first
season, he made 29 appearances out of a possible 32 and scored 11 tries. He came
through the Saint Helens Academy and Rochdale took him on trial at the
beginning of 2018. He impressed in pre-season and was given a contract. He is currently
Barrow’s leading try scorer in 2019 with 9 tries.
Theerapol
(Tee) Ritson, fullback or wing, began his career
with Workington in 2014 and joined Newcastle Thunder last year. He is the only
player we know of in the UK competition to have played internationally for
Thailand.
Jake
Spedding, centre, was signed this year from
Saint Helens. He made his début for Saints in 2016 and in 2017 and 2018 he also
played for Sheffield on dual registration.
Jarrad
Stack, second row or centre, joined Barrow
in 2017 having started at Workington in 2009. He is an Australian. Prior to
this year he played mostly in the second row but this year he has been playing
at centre most of the time.
In
the halves
Lewis
Charnock, scrum-half or loose forward, started
with Saint Helens in 2013 from where he joined Barrow in 2017. While he was at
Saints he also played on loan or dual reg for Rochdale (2015), Leigh (2016) and
Bradford (2016). In 2013 he played for England Academy. He usually takes over
the goal kicking duties if Jamie Dallimore is not available.
Jamie
Dallimore, stand-off, began his career with
Oldham in 2011. In June 2013 he moved to North Wales Crusaders. During 2016 he was
released by North Wales and joined Barrow. He has also played for Wales Select
XIII and Cumbria. Jamie is Barrow’s main goal kicker.
Ryan
Johnston, scrum-half or stand-off, joined
Barrow in 2017 from Warrington Wolves Academy.
At
Hooker
Nathan
Mossop has been mostly starting on the bench
this year. He made his début with Barrow in 2009 and has been there ever since
apart from 2012 when he spent the season with South Wales Scorpions.
Wartovo
Puara, often known as Wartovo Puara Junior,
is another 2019 signing from PNG Hunters. He made 1 appearance for PNG in the
2017 World Cup. He is Barrow’s usual starting hooker.
In
the pack
Josh
Johnson, prop, has been recruited from Hull
Kingston Rovers. He began his career with Huddersfield (2013-2016) and whilst
there had loan or dual reg spells with Doncaster, Batley and Oldham. He joined
Hull KR in 2017 and last year played 6 games for York on dual reg. He has
become a regular member of the starting team.
Yet another signing from PNG Hunters is Willie
Minoga, prop or second row. He is a PNG international and played in the
2017 World Cup.
Jono
Smith, second row, is in his second season
with Barrow. He started with North Wales in 2012 and spent four years there. In
2016 he moved to Rochdale Hornets.
Alec
Susino, prop or loose forward, is an
Australian. He joined Barrow last year from Mounties, a New South Wales Cup
side. In 2017 he played for Italy in a match against Malta which was played in
Sydney.
Jordan
Walne, prop, second row or loose forward,
began his career with Salford in 2013 and he remained a Salford player until
the end of 2017. While at Salford he played on dual reg at various times for
Oldham, Workington, North Wales and Halifax. Last year he was a Hull KR player
and also played for York on dual reg and Leigh on loan.
Dual
Registration and loan signings
Barrow do not have a dual registration agreement.
Nor do they have any players on loan. Jake Carter spent a month earlier this
year on loan at Whitehaven.
The
Fev connection
No one in the 2019 Fev squad has ever played for Barrow.
The only player in Barrow’s 2019 squad to have played for Fev is
Gareth Hock but he got injured in a boxing match pre-season, was later released without ever
playing for Barrow, and has now been signed by Leigh Centurions.
