All the RFL clubs since 1895

All the RFL clubs since 1895

Here is a chart showing all the professional and semi-professional clubs since the Northern Union breakaway in 1895.

Clubs are grouped by their current or most recent name but all the different names clubs have used are included with their dates.

N.B. There are four club names marked with asterisks - Chorley Borough (twice) and Liverpool City (twice). These are where two separate clubs used the same names!

Teams shown in Navy and White are those that Featherstone Rovers have played against (either Navy lettering on white background or White lettering on navy background).

If you spot any errors or omissions please let us know by leaving a comment at the bottom of the page.

    1. I believe that Oldham Roughyeds was never there official name, just a nickname.

  3. In relation to Oldham the club that was form in 1998 has no association with the previous club that went bust in 1997.

Oldham bears wasn't a separate club but the bears was put there for super league

    1. Of course you are correct but rugby league is about the fans. When are two clubs one club is quite subjective. We use three tests. 1) Do the two clubs have the same supporters, 2) Do the two clubs have many of the same players (South Wales Ironmen - West Wles Raiders had 11 players that moved with them), 3) Is it the same ownership/board (Chorley/Blackpool). If any of these apply we have categorised them as one club.

  4. Bradford Northern 1964 as the orig BN team went pop and re-emerged.
Also Hull were referred to as Hull Football Club as early as 1867
Hull KR were actually called 'Kingston amateurs' and then from their Sept 1885 game against Hull Shamrock as simply 'Kingston Rovers' (no Hull prefix) and after that Kingston Rovers FC!
Not sure when the Hull prefix was added but it was used in detailed media reports but the team in headline/fixture listing at the time at least until 1897 was still Kingston Rovers

  5. Thanks. I am sticking with Hull Kingston Rovers because they didn't actuqally join the Northern Union competition until 1899.

  7. Hull Football Club were always that from 1895 until 1996, then again from 2000.
    There wasn't a name change in 1995 !

  8. This is confusing. I have had people like you who say that they have always OFFICIALY been Hull FC and others who say that they were OFFICIALLY just Hull until 1995!

    1. The games administrators and media referred to the club as Hull Football Club, not just Hull, this may be colloquially the case but officially not, there's no confusion, just historical fact.

  9. Thanks for the info, fevnut, yes oldham has had a dwindling fanbase for years, due to the ageing fanbase. People leaving the area, the town demographic changing, years in the lower league. People hating the owner. Young players being snapped up by super league clubs and I suppose rugby league not being considered a major sport. Hopefully with sonny bill now playing that might change
