fevnut's blog: Leigh (Home - Qualifiers)

Match 28: Leigh Centurions (Home - Qualifiers)

fevnut's musings

Leigh Centurions - again!
At the end of last season there were quite a number of Fev supporters who were quite glad to see Leigh promoted. That was solely because they were glad to look forward to a season without playing them. That’s because we have lost seven successive matches against them. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Through history we’ve actually beaten them more often than they’ve beaten us. A lot has been made of Leigh chairman, Derek Beaumont, saying that Fev are the biggest threat in the Qualifiers. We choose to totally ignore that because it seems to us that Beaumont is constantly playing mind games and it is very difficult, therefore, to judge whether he really believes his own utterances!

So proud to be Fev
What an incredibly great weekend many of us had recently in Toulouse. We got off the bus from the airport and were about to start finding our hotel when we became aware of a mass of people singing. Looked up and it was the Fev supporters at ‘The Melting Pot’ over the road. For the uninitiated, The Melting Pot is the place where RL supporters gather in Toulouse. So, the next day it was down to the Stade Ernest Argelès. We got there easily with a €2 bus journey. Unfortunately many others took taxis and got delivered to the wrong stadium, arriving late at the match!
It was truly amazing, there we were over 700 miles from home, and the noise and atmosphere in the stadium was totally dominated by Fev supporters. We felt so proud to be a part of the Fev community. It was also a tremendous match. Those there will never forget that 15 minute spell in the second half when we were constantly defending our line without conceding a try. In the end we lost but we played really well and the deciding try came in the last minute from Kuni Minga, Toulouse’s brilliant winger, whose job was made easier by the weakening of our right flank caused by injury to Luke Briscoe.
Another full day then spent in Toulouse which included a boat trip on the river and canal and enjoying some lovely French food and fantastic ice-cream!
Any Fev fans contemplating a trip to France for a future map. It’s really well worth it!!

And a bit embarrassed too
Featherstone Rovers Ladies team have been undergoing major rebuilding this year after the departure of coach, Brenda Dobek, and losing many players too. So they did really well to reach last Sunday’s Challenge Cup Final played in York. It proved a step too far and after taking an early lead they were somewhat taken apart in the second half with Bradford Bulls eventually winning 50-16. The standard of the women’s game is constantly improving and is now unrecognisable from a few years ago. There was a wonderful performance from Bradford Bull’s second rower, Shone Hoyle.
But it wasn’t the scoreline that embarrassed us. No, it was the dire attitude of Fev folk to our women’s team. There may have been one or two more but we only saw 8 Fev supporters there (including us) and we didn’t see any Fev officials at all. In contrast there were about 300 supporters of the Bulls. They brought two coaches, several mini-buses, a drummer and a trumpeter and gave great vocal support to their team throughout the match. It was a bit like the Fev support in Toulouse. Our Ladies team have won numerous trophies over recent years but the support they are given by both the club and supporters is frankly pathetic.
