Today: Previously - August 13th
Rugby League
Rovers have played three time
previously on August 13th. Back in the 1960s the season began in August and in
1960 Rovers were at home fort the opening game of the season against Dewsbury.
Fev won the match 22-9. In these days of complaints about playing matches in
quick succession it is interesting to note that Fev played 4 further matches
that month alternating between Saturday and Wednesday fixtures.
By contrast, in 1997 matches in
August were near the end of the season. That year (before the play-offs began
in 1998) there was a Divisional Premiership competition that saw clubs divided
into East and West sections. On August 13th Fev lost 30-20 at home to Hull KR
in a Divisional Premiership (East match).
The Fev team that day was
Neil Summers; Richard Smith, Matt
Lambert, Danny Baker, Paul Gleadhill; Karl Pratt, Ty Fallins; Steve Molloy,
Paddy Handley, Gary Price, Simon Wileman, Neil Lowe, Danny Evans. Subs: Gavin Swinson, Andy Heptinstall, Craig Jackson,
Roy Powell
The Fev try scorers were Matt
Lambert, Danny Baker, Paul Gleadhill and Ty Fallins with Ty Fallins kicking 2
goals.
The most recent game to have been
played on August 13th came in 2006 when Rovers were in National League 2. In a
very tight match they beat Celtic Crusaders in another home match. The
scoreline was 11-10.

On the same day in 2006 when Fev were
beating Celtic Crusaders, the highest score in a match on August 13th happened
in a Super League match at Wheldon Road between Cas and Saint Helens. Saint
Helens won 72-4!
Last year in the Qualifiers, then
Championship side, Leigh Centurions, hosted Super League Salford Red Devils and
beat them 32-26. A result that was vital to Leigh winning promotion and Salford
having to play in the Million Pound Game.

The first international match to have been played on August 13th was
between New Zealand and Great Britain. It took place in Christchurch in 1932
and Great Britain won 25-14. It was the second of a three test series with Great
Britain winning the series 3-0.
In 1995 there was a match between Ireland and Scotland played in Dublin.
Ireland won a close game by 25-22.
Last year Germany beat the Netherlands 8-6 in a European Championship
‘B’ match played in Rotterdam.
