Rugby League

In 1922, Fev gain a stunning victory away at Halifax winning 29-6. In 1944 (no Northern Rugby League but a substitute Wartime Emergency League) Rovers defeat Barrow 24-7 at Post Office Road.

In 1990 the opposition is Hull Kingston Rovers at home in the Rugby League Championship. The teams draw 14-14.

The Fev team were:

Chris Bibb ; Ikram Butt, Terry Manning, Paul Newlove, Alan Banks; Ian Smales, Deryck Fox; Jeff Grayshon, Trevor Clark, Leo Casey, Chris Burton, Gary S Price, Brendon Tuuta.

At that time two substitutes were allowed but only for injuries. They were only recorded if they actually played.

Fev’s try scorers were Chris Bibb and Brendon Tuuta with Deryck Fox kicking three goals. Hull KR only scored one try but kicked 5 goals.

In 1994 Rovers beat Warrington 30-4 in a home Rugby League Championship match (those were the days!) and in the Summer Era in 2010 after winning the Championship league, they beat Halifax 46-16 in an end of season play-off match only to lose the Grand Final to them at Warrington by one point.

Warrington Wolves have had a major slide in achievement this year after taking the Super League Winners Shield last year but the fluctuations of club success are marked even more starkly by a result that occurred in Super League in 2001 when the Wolves hosted Bradford Bulls and were beaten by 84-12. Amongst the try scorers were hat tricks for Michael Withers and Graham Mackay. Henry Paul kicked 10 goals before Paul Deacon came on as a substitute and he kicked another 4.

Last year, in the Super League Super 8s, Catalans Dragons came to Wakefield and left with a 14-10 win.

On September 9th 1981, Castleford hosted a match between Yorkshire and Lancashire which Yorkshire won 21-15.

In 2002 there was an international match which would have been inconceivable a few years before. Tartarstan beat the United States by 30-24. This is the only international match to have taken place on September 9th.
