Round 1

Fev Reserves v Halifax Reserves: Wednesday March 6th

After years of pleading for a return to having a Rovers Reserve team it was a huge joy to take our seats in the stand to see a dream come true.

It was always going to be a huge task for Fev to win their opening match of the season. The Fev team were playing together in a competitive match for the very first time and they were facing Halifax who have been running a reserve team for several years and have players who are used to playing together. Fax were also strengthened by being able to field eight players who are in their first team squad and that included their entire starting forward pack.

We count as members of first team squads any player who has been issued with a first team squad number.

It looked like Fax were going to annihilate us and were 18-0 up by the 19th minute. But then our valiant young lads got their game going and prevented any further scores in the first half and began to get on top leading to a beautiful try from Kiedan Hartley in the 33rd minute. Unfortunately Jorge Richardson was unable to convert and missed conversions ended up as the difference between the teams.

The improved performance continued into the 2nd half and Jimmy McDaniel scored an excellent try in the 48th minute but again we failed with the extras. For the next ten minutes it was fairly even with some excellent goal-line defence from Fev, but when the Halifax hooker burrowed in for a try in the 60th minute taking the score to 22-8 it looked like game over.

But our lads never gave up and the final 15 minutes saw them very much on top. Jordan Taylor scored in the 67th minute (this time converted). He added a second in the 78th minute but it was too late for Fev to be able to snatch a win.
