2019 MATCHES

FIRST TEAM SQUAD
n.b. The 'Kevin Brown' in the list of York's 2019 squad is NOT the Warrington player who played for Leigh against us last Sunday!

LAST TIME OUT

Head Coach: James Ford

James Ford began his career as a head coach with York in 2015 and has remained with the club ever since. The only year he didn’t guide them into the League One play-offs was last year and that was because the won automatic promotion by finishing to of the league. And each year that he has been in charge they have reached at least Round 5 of the Challenge Cup.

In 2017 Toronto Wolfpack won all 15 of their League One Fixtures but Ford’s York team caused a huge upset beating them in the League One Super 8s.

As a player he was usually in the backs although he did also play at fullback and half-back. His career started with Fev in 2003, making 34 appearances in 3 years. In 2005 he went on loan to Sheffield Eagles and then spent the following three years there, establishing himself as a regular first team member, before moving to Super League with Castleford in 2009. In 2010 he joined Widnes, and in April 2011 he transferred to York where he has remained ever since and when he retired from playing at the end of 2014 moved into the head coach position.

Captain: Tim Spears

The former Fev captain made is now in his 17th season as a professional player. Although he was a Fev supporter as a kid he made his début with Castleford in 2003. In 2004 he went on loan to both Dewsbury and Batley and signed for Batley in 2005 where he remained until he came to Rovers in 2009. He was a vital player in Fev’s four successive seasons topping the Championship from 2010 to 2013.

He became Fev captain in 2013 and remained so until he joined York in 2017.

Tim has made 392 career appearances (so far)!

At the Back

Jason Bass, wing or centre, was signed this year from Coventry Bears, where he had been since making his professional début there in 2015. Whilst at Coventry he also played frequently at fullback.

Brad Hey, centre or second row, began his career with Batley in 2015. In July that year he went on loan to York and then signed for them the following year and has remained there since.

Matthew Marsh, fullback or stand-off. His career began with Hull Kingston Rovers in 2015 although his début that year was for Coventry Bears on loan. He also played for Newcastle Thunder on dual reg in 2015. Last year he played for York on dual reg last year but is now a York player. He is York’s top try scorer this season and has also kicked 6 goals.

Liam Salter, centre or second row, also started at Hull KR and made 121 appearances for them between 2012 and 2018. In 2016 he played for Newcastle Thunder on dual reg. He joined York at the beginning of this season.

Perry Whiteley, centre or wing, was in the academy at Huddersfield Giants but then went to Australia for two years playing for Cherry Pickers. On his return in in 2015 he joined Workington and moved on to Sheffield in 2017. In 2018 he signed for Keighley but transferred to York at the end of July.

In the Halves

Liam Harris, stand-off or fullback, is at York on loan from Hull FC. He began as a professional player with Hull KR in 2017 but actually made his professional début with York on dual reg that year. Last year he joined Hull FC and also played for Doncaster on dual reg.

Connor Robinson, scrum-half or stand-off is York’s main goal kicker and has already kicked 95 this year and scored 213 points. His first two seasons were at Hull KR in 2014. In 2015 he played for Coventry on loan and Halifax on dual reg and then joined Halifax in 2016. He moved to York in June 2017. Last season he scored 420 points for York!

At Hooker

Kriss Brining, a highly rated hooker, counts as a new signing this year but he played for York in his first six seasons from 2011-2016. He transferred to Salford in 2017 and played for them 25 times (23 as a sub) that year but didn’t play at all in 2018. When he was released by Salford he re-signed for York.

Will Jubb can play at either hooker or scrumhalf. He is one of several York players who started at Hull KR. He made his début there in 2016. The following year he played his first game for York on dual reg and then transferred from Hull KR to York in 2018.

In the Pack

Jack Blagbrough, prop, has joined York from Leigh Centurions. He started at Huddersfield in 2013 and spent the following 3 seasons at Sheffield. During his second season at Sheffield he played 12 games on loan for York. The following year he was on loan at Oldham. He didn’t play in the 2017, maybe because he was studying Maths and Biology at Leeds University. He spent last year at Leigh.

Graeme Horne prop or loose forward, brings Super League experience to the side. He began with Hull FC in 2003 where he was a real utility player, in his 7 seasons there he played in every position except fullback, hooker and prop. That is ironic as York usually use him as a prop! In 2010 he moved to Huddersfield Giants, returning to Hull in 2012 but this time with Hull KR where he remained until he signed for York in 2018 although he had played for York in 2017 on dual reg.

Josh Jordan-Roberts, second row or centre, came through the Leeds Academy and made his début for Leeds in 2016. At the end of the 2017 season he played 7 games for Bradford on loan. Early in 2018 he played for Hunslet on loan and then signed for York in July.

Marcus Stock, forward, began with Sheffield but never played a first team match there. In July 2016 he transferred to Hemel. He didn’t play professionally in 2017 but was again with Hemel in 2018. He joined York this year.

Jack Teanby, prop, 6’4” and 18 stone, he has joined York after 3 seasons with Dewsbury.

Dual Registration and loan signings

York have a dual registration agreement with Coventry Bears but it has involved players going out rather than coming in. So far this year Michael Kelly, Dave Petersen and Marcus Stock have played for Coventry.

Prop Forward Jordan Baldwinson is on loan from Wakefield, Will Oakes from Hull KR and Cameron Scott from Hull FC. York have very recently taken Danny King on loan from Dewsbury.

They have had several other players on loan this season who have now returned. Harry Aldous from Newcastle in May and June, Joe Batchelor played for York 2017 and 2018 and was then signed by Saint Helens who loaned him back to York from February to April, Tyler Dupree from Leeds in May and June, Lewis Heckford from Dewsbury in April, Conor McGrath from Halifax in March and April, Nick Rawsthorne from Toronto Wolfpack in April, Cain Southernwood from Hunslet in April and May, and Junior Vaivai from Hull KR in May and June.

The Fev connection

There have been some notable moves between York and Fev. Both Steve Quinn and Graham Steadman moved from York to Rovers and Fev’s Challenge Cup Captain Mal Dixon had 2 spells at York and was also their Head Coach.

In the 2019 York squad there are 5 players who have played for Fev. Jordan Baldwinson was never a contracted Fev player but nevertheless played 78 times for Fev, between 2015 and 2017, on loan and dual reg from Leeds. Ben Cockayne, who has now retired, played 9 times for Fev at the end of 2011 including a try in that year’s Grand Final win. Tyler Dupree who played for York on loan from Leeds played for Fev in the Championship Shield last year. Andy Ellis, played for Fev from 2012 tyo 2016. He retired after playing for York in 2017 but in both 2018 and 2019 he has, nevertheless, played for them when they were short of hookers. And then there’s Tim Spears!

There are 6 players who have played for Fev in 2019 who have played for York. John Davies was on dual reg from Castleford in 2010, 2011 and 2012. Brad Day also played for them on dual reg from Castleford in 2014, as did Ben Reynolds. Danny Maskill played on loan for them last year. Jack Ormondroyd was there last year (on loan from Leeds). Will Dagger played for York on dual reg in 2018.
