Referees
Have you
ever stopped to think about the fact that fans regularly assert that referees
are corrupt and biased against their teams? On many occasions we have witnessed
the fans of both sides in a game calling the referee a cheat because of alleged
bias!
Supporters
tend simply not to notice when the referee makes an error in favour of their
team. We have never forgotten an occasion quite a few years ago when the
referee awarded Fev a try. But from where we were sitting it was clear that Fev
had gained possession from a high tackle. In attempting to pick the ball up the
Fev player knocked on and then it was gathered up by another Fev player who was
in an offside position!!! Referees make mistakes and that was one of the worst
we have ever seen but there were no complaints from Fev fans.
This year
we do appear to have suffered more than usual from bad decisions. Of particular
note was the try that was awarded against us at Bradford when the Bradford
player knocked on before the line and never touched the ball over the line. But
there have also been several times when Fev fans have sworn that good tries
were incorrectly refused by the referee but close scrutiny of the match video
has shown that the referee was correct.
Clearly
that was not the case last Saturday. The video evidence shows without doubt that
Fev had two perfectly good tries disallowed and that cost us the game, 4th
place in the league and a home tie this weekend.
But to jump
from a referee making errors to accusations of bias and cheating are unfounded
and a disservice to our wonderful sport.

What a
magnificent response we have had (yet again) from Fev fans wishing to support
the club. There have been times in the past when fans have been somewhat
suspicious of how monies were used and that inevitably makes them apprehensive
of giving. However, I think we can say that we all trust Terry Mullaney and the
fact that he is chair of the group administering the fund has helped enormously
and we have been able to persuade several supporters to join up on the basis of
the role that Terry is taking.

Whatever we
all think of him as a Leigh player, there can be no doubt at all that he has
been a tremendous servant to the sport of ruby league. Assuming that he plays
on Sunday it will be his 557th career appearance with club games for Leigh,
Saint Helens, Wigan and Warrington and representative matches for England A,
England and Great Britain.
Very few
players ever get to the figure of 300 games let alone over 550.
He has now
announced his retirement (again) at the end of the season. We wish him well and
hope that that 557th game will indeed be Leigh’s end of season and his last
game!!
Supporting
the Foundation
Do you ever
buy anything from Amazon?
We are sure
that all Fev fans are proud of the work done by Featherstone Rovers Foundation
which is a registered charity.
Did you
know that there is a way that you can financially support the foundation without
costing you a penny!
Amazon run
a scheme whereby you can name a charity and a percentage (yes, a very small
one) of any purchase is donated to the charity of your choice.
Here’s how
you do it.
1. Sign in to https://smile.amazon.co.uk on your
desktop or mobile phone browser.
2. From your desktop, go to Your Account
from the navigation at the top of any page, and then select the option to
Change your Charity.
3.
Select a new charitable organization
to support and type in ‘Featherstone Rovers Foundation’
The only other thing that you have to then is to login to Amazon by using the address https://smile.amazon.co.uk
rather than just amazon.co.uk when you do any shopping and then your
purchases will accrue some money for the Fev Foundation.
Very interesting read and WHO would be a referee lol.
