LAST TIME OUT
Head
Coach: Paul Crarey
Paul Crarey has been
the Barrow head coach since 2015 and he was also head coach in 2006 and 2007.
He had a very brief stint as head coach at Whitehaven in 2008 but departed in March
of that year. He has re-built the Barrow side which includes many players who
have come up through the amateur clubs in Cumbria.
In 2017 his team won
promotion through the League One play-offs and despite being heavily tipped for
relegation in 2018 they finished 5th in the Championship Shield, above Sheffield,
Rochdale and Swinton, but they were unable to avoid relegation at the end of
2019.
His playing career was
as a hooker, mainly with Barrow but he also played for Carlisle.
Captain: Jarrad Stack
Jarrad
Stack, an Aussie, has taken over the Barrow captaincy this year following the
retirement of Martin Aspinwall. He originally came to the UK to join Workington
Town in 2010 and has remained here ever since. After seven seasons with
Workington he moved across Cumbria to join Barrow in 2017.
He is
primarily a second rower but also plays at centre and last year he actually
played more at centre than second row.
New
Signings for 2020
Carl
Forster, prop, was signed this year from Whitehaven.
His career began with Saint Helens in 2011. Whilst at Saints he played for
Swinton (2012 on dual reg), Rochdale (2013 on dual reg), Whitehaven (2013 and
2014, dual reg) and London Broncos (2014, on loan). In 2015 he joined Salford
and in 2016 had a loan spell with Swinton before joining Whitehaven in July of
that year. At the end of the season he became one of four joint coaches, and
was appointed as head coach in 2017. Gary Charlton took over as head coach in
2019 and Forster moved to Rochdale as a player, but was transferred back to
Whitehaven in May. There can’t be many players who have had experience as a
head coach!
Tom
Hopkins, second row, is one of several
players that Paul Crarey has recruited from local amateur sides. He has joined
from Askam.
Lee
Jewitt, prop, signed from Hull KR, adds
Super League experience to the Barrow squad. He was at the Wigan academy and made
his senior début as a Wigan player in 2005 against Saint Helens. He joined
Salford in 2007 and stayed there until 2013. At the end of 2013 he joined
Limoux in the French Elite 1 competition and returned to sign for Castleford in
2014. He played for Townsville Blackhawks in Australia in 2017, returning in
June to join Hull KR.
Carl
McBain, prop, has joined from Barrow Island
ARL.
Perry
Singleton, centre, has been signed from
Workington with whom he made his début in 2017.
Connor
Terrill, prop, has been signed from Millom
ARL.
Mark
Tyson, centre or stand-off, has been signed
from Askam ARL.
Dual
Registration and loan signings
Barrow do not have a dual registration agreement
with a professional club although they do have a dual reg arrangement with
local amateur clubs. They do not have any players currently on loan.
The
Fev connection
No one in the 2020 Barrow squad has ever played for Fev.
In Fev’s current squad there are two players who have played for
Barrow. Alec Susino was with Barrow
in 2018 and 2019 and Dean Parata
spent 2018 with them.
