Rugby League

Again there have been just the two previous Fev matches that took place on July 9th and just like last week the matches were in 2000 and 2006. Unfortunately both games were lost.

In 2000, Fev were away to Dewsbury Rams in a Northern Ford Premiership Top 8 play-off tie and they went out, losing 25-8.

In 2006 Fev were again away, this time in a National League match at Swinton. Swinton were then playing home matches at Sedgley Park RU. Swinton won 26-22 despite having Martin Moana sent off in the 52nd minute for use of elbow.

The Fev team that day was

Nathan Larvin; Brian Sutton, Wayne McHugh, Danny Kirmond, Matthew Wray; Richard Blakeway, Craig Fawcett; Ian Tonks, Paul Hughes, Stuart Dickens, Steve Dooler, James Houston, Carl Hughes.  Subs: Gavin Swinson, Greg Nicholson, Wayne Sutcliffe, Chris Birchall

Young Danny Kirmond scored 2 tries, Wayne McHugh and Greg Nicholson also crossed the line. Stuart Dickens kicked 3 goals and League Express named Carl Hughes as the Featherstone Man of the Match.

In 2006, the Northern Rail Cup Final took place in Blackpool on July 16th and Leigh Centurions beat Hull KR by 22-18.

Also in that year, there was a very close super league match on July 16th between Castleford and Leeds, played at ‘The Jungle’. Castleford won 31-30 with Danny Brough (who had been signed from Hull FC the previous month) kicking 5 goals and a drop goal for them.

In 2009, there was a Cumbrian derby in the Championship. Barrow travelled to Whitehaven and were beaten 28-4.

There have been two Ashes tests on July 16th. In 1932 Great Britain beat Australia 18-13 in Sydney and then in 1966 the Aussies won 6-4 in Brisbane. 3 years later, in 1969 Australia were playing another test match with New Zealand as opponents this time. The game was played in Rotorua, NZ and Australia won 8-0.

In 2003 Queensland had a big victory over New South Wales in Origin, winning 36-6 in Brisbane.

Last year, in the Nordic Cup, Sweden hosted Norway in Stockholm and the visitors won 40-24.
