Rugby League
Again there have been just the two
previous Fev matches that took place on July 9th and just like last week the
matches were in 2000 and 2006
In 2000, Fev were at home to Widnes
Vikings in a Northern Ford Premiership Top 8 play-off tie and they won that
match 43-24.
The Fev team that day was:
Michael Rhodes; Jamie Stokes, Martin
Law, Jamie Coventry, Matt Bramald; Andy Bastow, Jamie Rooney; Stuart Dickens,
Richard Chapman, Craig Booth, Danny Evans, Neil Lowe, Steve Dooler. Subs: Paddy Handley, Matt Lambert, Andy
Heptinstall, Ricky Helliwell
Jamie Stokes and Steve Dooler both
scored two tries and there was one each for Matt Bramald, Stu Dickens and Neil
Lowe. Jamie Rooney kicked seven goals and a drop-goal.
A week later Fev went out of the
play-offs after losing 25-8 at Dewsbury. The Dewsbury coach at the time was
Neil Kelly!
In 2006 Fev were at home to London
Skolars in a National League 2 fixture and were comfortable winners 54-14.
Again Stu Dickens was a try scorer and he also kicked six goals. In that match
Jermaine Coleman was at stand-off for the Skolars. We mention that because 11
years later he is their coach and last weekend was playing for them again.

In Super League in 2005, on July 9th,
London Broncos beat Leeds Rhinos 32-24. The match was played at Brentford FC’s
ground, Griffin Park, which was the home for the Broncos that year. A year
later our 2017 opponents, Oldham, played a match they decidedly wouldn’t want
to remember. They were playing Widnes in National League One and lost 72-18.

On the international scene matches on July 9th include New Zealand
beating Australia 19-12 in Brisbane in 1983, Australia winning an Ashes tie
against Great Britain in Sydney in 1984 by 25-12 but Great Britain beating
Australia in a World Cup match, also in Sydney in 1988.
On July 9th 1994, Fiji played their first officially designated test
match. It was against France in Suva and they won that first test match 20-12.
2011 brought two interesting international games. In Oslo, Norway
defeated Germany 32-28 in a European Shield match and in Cairns the Great
Britain Students beat the Australian Students 24-10 to win a 3 match series 2-0
with one match drawn.
