ALL
THE ROVERS CENTRES
Here is a list of
everyone who has ever played at centre for the Rovers from the beginning of our
professional era in 1921 up until the end of last season (2018). They are
listed in the order of appearances in the starting line-up as a centre.
There are just two
players who have made more than 200 appearances at centre and they are both Fev
Super-Heroes. Steve Quinn is Fev's highest ever points scorer with 2,656 and
also the highest goal kicker with 1,200 goals plus 10 drop goals. When Rovers
beat Hull in the 1983 Challenge Cup Final both sides scored two tries so it was
Steve's goal-kicking that brought the cup back to Featherstone. The other
player with over 200 appearances for Fev is Jack Hirst but no one around today
ever saw him playing as he was a regular in the Rovers team from 1921-1930.
Jack became Fev's first ever international when he played for England against Wales
in 1923.
There are 19 players
who have made just 99 or more appearances at centre. We chose the figure of 99
for a special reason. It was the number of games at centre for Richard Newlove
which means that in the top 19 are a father and two of his sons - John Newlove,
Paul and Richard. One of a number of 'Fev families'.
The very large number
who only played one or two games at centre includes quite a few who only ever played
that many games for Rovers first team but it also includes several who made the
odd appearance at centre playing out of their usual position. In that category
are John Davies and Luke Briscoe. Perhaps the most surprising inclusion is
Trevor Clark who played 125 matches for Fev and 119 of those he started at
hooker. But his one game when he started at centre was a notable one. It was
the first game of the 1989/90 season in a victory away at Castleford. What a
great way to start a season!
