ALL THE ROVERS WINGERS
Here is a list of everyone who has ever played on the
wing for the Rovers from the beginning of our professional era in 1921 up until
the end of last season (2018). They are listed in the order of appearances in
the starting line-up as a winger.
There are 17 players who have made just 100 or more
appearances on the wing. 15 of them played less than 200 games but two players
played more than 300 games. Ken Kellett is top of the list having made 346 of
his 358 appearances on the wing. He was a member of our 1973 Challenge Cup
winning team in 1973. Jim Denton is the other and he also holds the record for
total Fev appearances (440). He scored a try and kicked a goal in Rovers first
ever professional match on August 21st, 1921 and continued playing right
through until 1934.
As with fullbacks there are some surprises at the bottom
end of the table. Steve Dooler who played by far the majority of his games at
loose forward or second row with just a handful at centre turned out on the
wing against Leigh in 2002.
Perhaps the most surprising Fev winger doesn’t appear in
the list because he started the match, as usual, at prop. We can’t
remember which match it was, but there was one when we suffered a number of
injuries that resulted in players changing position and it ended up with us
having Leo Casey on the wing for a time!
