Today Previously: May
7th
Rugby League
When doing this page I usually look through
the previous matches that Fev have played on the relevant date and decide which
is the most significant. Well, for May 7th choosing the most significant is the
easiest job in the world. On May 7th 1983 everyone outside Fev knew that Hull
FC were going to win the Challenge Cup. But, of course, they were all wrong and
the people of Fev were right because by the time the afternoon had ended at
Wembley Terry Hudson had lifted the cup and David Hobbs had collected the Lance
Todd Trophy.
It is worth reminding everyone just
why Hull were deemed to be such red hot favourites. They had finished the
league season as Champions and Fev finished 12th. It’s also worth looking
carefully at that Hull team for it was stacked full of internationals and
included 3 players who are in the Rovers Hall of Fame!
Six
years later Hull did gain some partial revenge on May 7th when they beat Fev
23-0 in a Premiership Trophy semi-final at the Boulevard. Other results include
Fev beating Lézignan 42-16 in a 2011 Challenge Cup tie.

Dewsbury Rams may be struggling this
year but in 2000 they beat Lancashire Lynx 72-13 in a home Northern Ford
Premiership match. The Dewsbury scrum-half kicked 10 goals and according to
League Express was man of the match. It was Barry Eaton, now assistant coach at
Leeds Rhinos.
In 2011 Hull FC were again playing a
Challenge Cup match but this time it was the 4th round at home to Oldham and
they gave the Roughyeds a 82-0 thrashing. At fullback for Hull was Richard
Whiting who scored a try and kicked 11 goals.

On the international scene Australia
beat New Zealand 12-8 at Melbourne in 2010. There were two internationals last
year - Samoa beating Tonga 18-6 in Parramatta and the Cook Islands beat Lebanon
30-290 in Sydney.
