Rugby League
There have been three previous
occasions when Rovers have played on June 16th.
In 1996, the first year of the summer
era, Fev had an away league match against Rochdale Hornets and won the game
convincingly 44-12. The Fev team that day was:
Carl Gibson (T); Eddie Rombo (2T),
Steve Lay (T), Darren Hughes, Owen Simpson (T); Martin Pearson (2T/6G), Deryck
Fox; Steve Molloy, Neil Roebuck, Simon Tuffs (T), Roy Powell, Richard Gunn,
Neil Summers. Subs: Craig Jackson, Joe
Naidole, Chris Bibb, Andy Heptinstall
Playing at centre for Rochdale was
Richard Agar and apparently on the wing outside him was Craig Booth!
In 2002 we welcomed Leigh Centurions
to Post Office Road for a Northern Ford Premiership tie and duly sent them home
with a 32-26 defeat. This time Richard Agar was playing for Fev and it was
actually his debut.
Not so happy was the match on June
16th 2011 when Halifax came to Fev for a Northern Rail Trophy and beat us 31-30.
The score was 30-30 when the hooter sounded so they played ‘Golden Point Extra
Time’. In the third minute of the extra time the late Danny Jones kicked a drop
goal to take Halifax through to the final where they lost to Leigh Centurions
at Blackpool.

June 16th 1997 saw Saint Helens and
Wigan playing in Australia in the World Club Championship. A tournament that
was abandoned after the one year, primarily because of the lamentable
performance of the English clubs. Saint Helens lost 48-8 at Cronulla Sharks and
Wigan Warriors were defeated 34-0 by Brisbane Broncos.

June 16th, 1979 was a date to forget
for the Great Britain team who were beaten 35-0 in an Ashes test match in
Brisbane. It was the first of a three test series and although GB put in
improved performances in the second and third tests Australia still won the
series 3-0.
In 2007 Germany were beaten 54-28 by the British Army. We don’t have the
team sheet for that match but later in the year Germany played the Czech
Republic with a team which included four Keinhorst brothers including a 16 year
old Jimmy!
