Rugby League
Amazingly, 2017 is the first year
that Rovers have ever played a match on June 21st!
*********************
June 21st 1997 saw one of the very
few European victories over Australian clubs in the World Club Championship
with Paris Saint Germain beating Perth Reds 24-0 in Paris. On the same day,
over in Australia, North Queensland Cowboys beat Salford Reds 44-8.
In 2008, Catalans were in their third
season and beginning to become a real force. On June 21st they beat Warrington
Wolves 52-14 at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.

New Zealand have twice played international matches in Auckland on June
21st. In 1975 they drew a World Cup match against England 17-17 and in 1981
they beat France 25-2.
There have also been two ‘State of Origin’ games played in Sydney on
this day. In 1983 New South Wales won 10-6 and in 1988 Queensland won 38-22.
The spread of Rugby League is well illustrated by the two most recent
international matche3s to be played on June 21st. In 2014 Russia beat Serbia
20-6 in Narofominsk. That match was part of the European Championship ‘B’
tournament. In 2015 Headingley hosted a match between Malta and Belgium with
Malta winning by a single point - 35 to 34.
