Amazingly, 2017 is the first year that Rovers have ever played a match on June 21st!

June 21st 1997 saw one of the very few European victories over Australian clubs in the World Club Championship with Paris Saint Germain beating Perth Reds 24-0 in Paris. On the same day, over in Australia, North Queensland Cowboys beat Salford Reds 44-8.

In 2008, Catalans were in their third season and beginning to become a real force. On June 21st they beat Warrington Wolves 52-14 at the Stade Gilbert Brutus.

New Zealand have twice played international matches in Auckland on June 21st. In 1975 they drew a World Cup match against England 17-17 and in 1981 they beat France 25-2.

There have also been two ‘State of Origin’ games played in Sydney on this day. In 1983 New South Wales won 10-6 and in 1988 Queensland won 38-22.

The spread of Rugby League is well illustrated by the two most recent international matche3s to be played on June 21st. In 2014 Russia beat Serbia 20-6 in Narofominsk. That match was part of the European Championship ‘B’ tournament. In 2015 Headingley hosted a match between Malta and Belgium with Malta winning by a single point - 35 to 34.
