Rugby League

The only previous time that Rovers have played on June 25th was in the year 2000 when they walloped Workington Town 58-6 at home.

The Fev team that day was:

Michael Rhodes; Jamie Stokes, Chris Spurr, Jamie Coventry, Matt Bramald; Andy Bastow, Jamie Rooney; Stuart Dickens, Richard Chapman, Craig Booth, Danny Evans, Neil Lowe, Matt Lambert.  Subs: Paddy Handley, Martin Law, Andy Heptinstall, Steve Dooler

No less than nine of the Rovers team scored tries. There were two apiece for Matt Bramald and Jamie Rooney and one each from Jamie Stokes, Chris Spurr, Jamie Coventry, Andy Bastow Stuart Dickens, Richard Chapman and Martin Law. Jamie Roony kicked 5 goals and Craig Booth added two. Rugby League Express named Jamie Rooney as Man of the Match.

How the times have changed! In a Super League match on June 25th, 2000 Salford City Reds travelled to Odsal for a match which Bradford Bulls won 96-14. That was and remains the highest score ever in a Super League match. A rarity in that match was a hat trick from Jamie Peacock. It was the only hat trick of his club career although in the same year he scored one for England in a World Cup group match against Fij. Robbie Paul scored 4 tries and Henry Paul kicked 14 goals.

In 1957 New Zealand beat Great Britain 29-21 in a World Cup match in Sydney. 1966 saw Great Britain beat Australia 17-13, also in Sydney. 11 years later, in 1977, there was a very sad result for GB (again in Sydney) when they lost to Australia by 13-12 in a World Cup Final.
